Answers to the Science Detective Reproductive System article in class:
1c. False - it is a zygote
2. d. none of the above
sentence number 4
3. c. progresses
4. mitosis vs. meiosis
cell is cloned, identical to parent cell DNA is slightly rearranged b/c of cross over
1 DNA copy and 1 cell division 1 DNA copy and 2 cell divisions
46 chromosomes 23 chromosomes
diploid, somatic cells for body haploid, gamete cells for reproduction
5. Reproduction is the process living organisms use to produce more of their own kind. Most eukaryotes require a male and female of the species to provide DNA in gametes, along with the structures to combine the cells in fertilization and a means to provide that the offspring reach birth.
6. Female fish may lay eggs in a nest of some kind in water which allows the male fish to swim by and spray sperm over them for fertilization, all of which occurs external to the fish's body.
7. Consider the impact of clean water, air, available nutritious food, and shelter from predators and inclement weather on a developing body. Even on an adult body, the stresses of famine (lack of food), water borne disease (bacteria and parasites in water can make you very sick), too much food and not enough exercise (humans), can shorten a life span.
